Kat has been an art teacher at Anchorage Public School for 14 years. Her years as an elementary and middle school art teacher have greatly influenced her work. She loves the color, exuberance and simplicity of children's art work. The textural aspect of clay is what fascinates Lewis the most. She collects all sorts of materials including old lace, batik printing blocks, screws, bolts, marker caps and children's toys to press into the clay for various images and textures. Lewis always looks at an object as a potential eyeball, fish scale or ladies' brooch.
Artist’s Statement
Lewis hopes that the vivid color and elaborate textures on her whimsical creatures and characters will bring a smile each time her work is viewed. Perhaps the depiction of creatures, both real and imagined, often surrounded by foliage and flowers, will instill a love and reverence for the natural world.
